SUP event with Miss Hawaii contestants

We had the opportunity to sponsor the 2015 Miss Hawaii and Miss Teen Hawaii Pageants which will be held on November 23rd, 2014.  As part of the sponsorship, we took the contestants Stand Up Paddling at Ala Moana Beach park, this event is featured in the video below.  The winners of the pageants will also win a new Blue Planet SUP board, we will post about that later.

I realize that some people think of these pageants as sexist and demeaning to women but these ladies impressed me not just by their beauty but also by their good attitude, genuine smiles, self confidence and gratitude.  I must admit that even as a happily married family man I enjoy the company of these beautiful ladies in skimpy bikinis.  Speaking of skimpy bikinis I have to thank my friend Ben Fieman for introducing us to this opportunity.  Ben is the owner of Kaimana Beachwear and designed all the bikinis worn by the Miss Hawaii contestants.  Nice work Ben!

If part of what these young ladies are judged by is how they look in a bikini, it might as well be in a natural setting and I can't think of a better one than on the beach and in the water on a SUP.   I cringe when I see photos of celebrities posing on SUP's with their paddle held backwards.  If you check out the video and pics, you will notice that we made sure these girls got it right, haha.

Clearly there were many exceptional girls but one stood out to me in particular with a great smile and attitude.  Her name is Tesia Melani and after checking her website I found out she has a great backstory, having grown up in modest conditions on the westside, her family was chosen to live in one of Kawamoto's Kahala mansions.  Clearly Tesia is all about making herself into the best person she can be and helping others do the same.  She even wrote a book titled Upgrading Your Future which I am reading now.

Thanks to all the contestants and good luck in the Pageant!

How to strap a SUP or surf board to a car that does not have roof racks

One of the most common questions we get from people interested in renting SUP's from us is how to transport the boards to the beach without a roof rack.  The video shows how we strap boards to the roof, everything you need is included in our low rental fees.  You can safely transport up to 3 stacked SUP's on almost any car using this method.  The EVA pads and straps are available on our website at:

2014 Blue Planet Soft Top SUP- construction video

Our new 2014 Blue Planet Soft Top SUP's are available now at our Honolulu Store and at select Blue Planet dealers.

This video was shot at the Blue Planet factory in November 2013 showing the construction process of the 2014 Blue Planet Softtop boards. The softtop boards are designed to be easy to use, lightweight and durable. The PC bottom sheet make the bottom very scratch and ding resistant, much like the bottom sheet on a snowboard. The deck and rails are wrapped with high density EVA foam which makes it safe and resilient.  The bamboo veneer sandwich construction makes these boards strong yet light, the 10'6 weighs in at only 24 lbs.  The boards come with tie down deck plugs, gopro mount on nose, self venting gore vent plug, and the new SUP Grip handle which makes lifting, carrying and locking the board easier than ever.  The first part of the construction process is very similar to our veneer boards, check out the veneer board construction video on the construction page to see how the inside of the board is made:

Wet Feet | Blue Planet WPA race results

This year's Wet Feet/ Blue Planet WPA race was held on the south shore from Hawaii Kai to Kaimana.  It was the first downwind paddleboard race of the season and we are looking forward to many good races this summer.  Thanks to all the participants and we hope to see you for the Wet Feet/ Blue Planet WPA Regional Championships, scheduled for September 15th.

Here is a short race recap by Jeff Chang:

Conditions were good and times were fast. The heavy hitters were out today and the battle for first was tight and it came down to the wire with Scott Gamble getting the edge on Kaeo Abbey at the last mark before the finish by getting the most out of a small wave. The winning time was 1:09 beach to beach! On the women's side favorite Morgan Hoesterey led the whole way and bested the field on a 14. Thanks to all those who came out to support and participate today and especially to the volunteers.
