We took a family trip to Costa Rica in July 2015 and scored some amazing uncrowded waves on our SUP's.
Pura Vista Hills:
My good friend and Blue Planet team rider, Fabrice Beaux, formerly a professional windsurfer moved to Costa Rica a few years ago and now operates two vacation rental villas in a beautiful remote location overlooking the jungle and ocean, surrounded by wildlife. He showed us some amazing, uncrowded surf breaks that were perfect for stand up paddling. Check out the video for some video footage of SUP surfing in the area and what Fabrice Beaux is up to these days.
For more information on Fabrice's vacation rental villas, please visit: puravistahills.com
We stayed at the larger Hacienda Isabella, which sleeps up to 10: http://www.vrbo.com/510392
Fabrice also rents Hacienda De Shira, which sleeps up to 4: http://www.vrbo.com/510392
Nosara Pura Vida:
We also went to Nosara where Oscar Diaz, a Nosara local and owner of Nosara Pura Vida showed us some of his favorite Stand Up Paddle surfing spots, including an incredible right hand reef break and Playa Guiones, a beautiful beach break in walking distance from his new shop. We are currently working on a distribution deal to bring Blue Planet boards to Costa Rica and Nosara Pura Vida will be the first dealer to have our boards in stock, check back for more details coming soon:
Here are a few shots from the trip:

Blue Planet Inflatable SUP Kickstarter Campaign has launched!
We are excited to say that our kickstarter campaign for our newly designed Inflatable SUP line has successfully launched. Within just 24 hours we have made 20% of our goal so far! We spent more than 2 years developing our new inflatable SUP designs and after extensively testing them on a variety of conditions we decided to try and bring them to market at a much more affordable price than other High Quality Inflatable SUP's on the market right now. Our real goal is to get more people on the water, for less.
You can view our kickstarter project here:
We would love for you to become a backer and help us make this project a reality, but you can also help without donating by helping us spread the word.
Find us on Facebook and help spread the word.
Mahalo for any support and hope to see you on the water.

If you live in Honolulu and would love to own a Stand Up Paddle board but don't have a place to store it or a way to transport it (or don't want to deal with it), we have a simple solution for you. We are partnering with the Nalu Storage board lockers in Waikiki that allows you to own and store your board steps from the beach without hassles. If you rent a storage space from Nalu Storage and buy a SUP or surfboard from our shop, we will deliver it and put it on the rack for you at no extra charge, plus Nalu Storage will give you two months free storage if you mention that you bought your board from Blue Planet! For hassle free SUP ownership, follow these simple steps:
1) Go to http://nalustorage.com and reserve a locker, you can do this online. Make a note of the locker number.
2) Come to our shop and purchase a new SUP or surfboard, check this website for available models or pricing or come into the shop and we will help you find the best board for your needs and get it all set up for you. If you are not sure what to get, we offer a try before you buy demo program and free SUP clinics/ demos.
3) Provide us with the storage locker number and two padlocks (or order a combination padlock from Nalu Storage) and we will deliver the board and set it up on the storage rack for you at no extra charge, it will be waiting for you whenever you want to use it. Validated parking is available at the Royal Hawaiian Center, see Nalu Storage website for details.
4) That's it, time to enjoy the ocean.
Rental customers: If you are in Hawaii on vacation and your hotel does not provide board storage or is too far from the water, Nalu Storage also offers short term locker rentals which can be used to store our rental boards. We can provide the same delivery and pickup service for rental boards but charge a fee of $20 each way (flat fee regardless of number of boards rented).
You can find these products by the links below or at our shop at 540 Ward Ave. Honolulu, HI 96814
Kook, Barney, Newbie, all nicknames for un-experienced waterman(or woman) and often shouted from angst locals upon entry of a line-up. Surf culture is inherently engrained with a “pay your dues” mentality and can be intimidating at times, as I found out first hand. Don't let this deter you though, for every bad egg there are plenty of people willing to share their knowledge and insight about the water. I've dealt with what I call the “bro/brah attitude” in the snow culture which leads to the scaring off of new participants. Unfortunate yes, but the main basis of this reaction is fear. The fear of looking/sounding “stupid” in front of seasoned veterans. I know I felt awkward and tried to “play it cool” when I first walked into a local surf shop here on Oahu. Getting over that fear is your first step. I truly believe that when starting out; THERE ARE NO STUPID QUESTIONS! And if any SUP sales people make you feel like you just asked one, then I guess they forgot they were “new” once too. Besides, how many people do you know are good at something the first couple of times they try it?
The reason I am starting this feature on our Blue Planet Surf blog is I to am a kook, barney, newbie. I moved to Oahu in November of 2012 from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Packed away my snowboard gear and eagerly looked forward to spending more time in the water. So how did a land locked snowboarder come to work at Blue Planet Surf selling SUP's you may ask. Well, long story short, I've worked in Action Sports retail for over a decade now, and I've been standing on a board sideways for fifteen years. So I traded in the white snow capped peaks for tan sandy beaches and tasty waves. With that, my goal for this blog series is to drop the iron curtain of surf culture and allow us kooks, barneys and newbies a forum to ask anything without the fear of ridicule, laughter and teasing.
So a common question we get is “Where do I start?” With the growing popularity of SUP and the hundreds of brands popping up everywhere, you have endless choices. My biggest piece of advice with this is that if possible you should rent or demo first. Every board handles differently, and even boards with similar specs can be worlds apart. Here at Blue Planet Surf we have a rental credit program that allows you to credit up to $250 of your rentals towards the purchase of a new board. And while we're special in the fact we carry our own in-house brand of SUP's, a lot of shops offer rentals and demos. The biggest factor (besides the size of the person) in determining what size SUP you need is your main objective on the water. Are you looking to just cruise around? Yoga? Surf as many waves as possible? Throw some kids on the front and paddle the bay? These decisions will weigh heavily in your SUP choice. Generally, a 10'-12' SUP will work great for flat water recreation and I would stay on the smaller end of the range if you want to possibly surf as well. Again that is a general range that would be narrowed down further depending on your size. We do have several boards that work for both but it's finding the size in that range that works best for your main objective on the water. With that said, I really do recommend you rent or demo something first. Speaking of demos. Our next demo is Sunday May 5th at 8am. And you can go to getupstanduphawaii.com for more details
Like I said earlier, we want this blog to be a forum as well. Feel free to comment, suggest topics or ask any of those “stupid” questions you weren't able to get answered elsewhere. Hope to see you on the water. Mahalo.
