Welcome to Blue Planet Surf.
As surfers, the ocean is our playground and we need to act as its shepherds. As a business, we do our best to use environmentally responsible materials, conserve energy, recycle and try to minimize our impact on the environment and the oceans. We encourage our customers to do the same. We pride ourselves on delivering high quality SUP boards and accessories at an affordable price. Our current product line offers SUP boards designed for beginners as well as advanced surfers and racers. Enjoy browsing our site, and let us know if there's any way we can help you find the perfect SUP product for you.
Five years ago Jeff Chang and I wrote a report on the Zen Waterman blog on some of the fastest unlimited race SUP's at the time and discussed the differences between displacement hulls and planing hulls and which worked best for which conditions. While it is relatively easy to test the speed of a board in flat water, testing in open ocean and downwind conditions is much more difficult due to the many variables that can't be controlled. I made a video discussing two 14' boards: The 14'x 26" Blue Planet Dark Horse model which is a displacement board designed to excel in calm water and the 14' x 28" Blue Planet Bump Rider model, a planing hull designed to be an excellent downwind/ open ocean board. For more in depth reading on this topic, please click the link to the Zen Waterman blog post above.
In the video below, I discuss my opinion on race board weights and the compromise of performance/ weight/ durability/ price that you will face when shopping for race boards.
Our shop manager Kevin Fung demonstrates how to professionally apply Rail Saver Pro clear protective rail tape. It's tricky to do this without trapping bubbles, we recommend watching this video before attempting your first installation:
Follow this link to find Railsaver Pro on our website:
Kevin shows how to find the widest point of the rail. Center the rail tape on the widest point, this is where it is the most likely to get damaged.
We recently made two videos that show our preferred methods for securing boards to your car easily using locking straps, the first one using two straps, the second one using one long strap:

This video shows the features of the new GoPro4 session camera and some simple mounting options for Stand Up Paddling:
The next two videos show the features and recommended setting for SUP for the GoPro4 Silver camera:
Using the paddle mount:
Using the headmount:
Using the nose mounted fcs plug mount:
Important: When you use your gopro in the water, make sure your camera is secured properly and use a floatie so your camera can't sink:
and use a tether to secure the camera to your board, paddle or body:
We took a family trip to Costa Rica in July 2015 and scored some amazing uncrowded waves on our SUP's.
Pura Vista Hills:
My good friend and Blue Planet team rider, Fabrice Beaux, formerly a professional windsurfer moved to Costa Rica a few years ago and now operates two vacation rental villas in a beautiful remote location overlooking the jungle and ocean, surrounded by wildlife. He showed us some amazing, uncrowded surf breaks that were perfect for stand up paddling. Check out the video for some video footage of SUP surfing in the area and what Fabrice Beaux is up to these days.
For more information on Fabrice's vacation rental villas, please visit: puravistahills.com
We stayed at the larger Hacienda Isabella, which sleeps up to 10: http://www.vrbo.com/510392
Fabrice also rents Hacienda De Shira, which sleeps up to 4: http://www.vrbo.com/510392
Nosara Pura Vida:
We also went to Nosara where Oscar Diaz, a Nosara local and owner of Nosara Pura Vida showed us some of his favorite Stand Up Paddle surfing spots, including an incredible right hand reef break and Playa Guiones, a beautiful beach break in walking distance from his new shop. We are currently working on a distribution deal to bring Blue Planet boards to Costa Rica and Nosara Pura Vida will be the first dealer to have our boards in stock, check back for more details coming soon:
Here are a few shots from the trip:
We want to say a big Mahalo to our great customers for voting Blue Planet Surf as Hawaii's Best Stand Up Paddle shop. We are very proud of this distinction and will work hard to earn it every year going forward. We are expanding our shop this year and will have lots of free parking available soon to allow us to serve you even better. Hope to see you at Blue Planet, Hawaii's SUP HQ, 540 Ward Avenue!
Being able to go Stand Up Paddling in Venice was a dream come true for me. I had it on my bucket list for a while so when we took a family vacation to Florence this January I planned a day trip to Venice despite the cold weather. I contacted Eliana from SUP in Venice and even though her SUP business is usually closed for the winter she agreed to not only take me on a tour but also arranged a Gondola ride and Gondolier's lesson for the rest of the group as well as a Venetian style lunch and walking tour of the city. It was an awesome way to see Venice, here is the video:
