Tips and pointers on how to choose your first SUP

If you're interested in getting into the great sport of stand up paddle boarding (SUP) and have done a little research to help you with your decision process, you know how challenging it is to narrow your focus to the right board for you. With board lengths ranging from less than 7 feet to over 17 feet, board widths ranging from 25 inches to 40 inches, and the need to consider other variables like thickness, volume, shape, environmental conditions, fin setup, and so on, choosing the right SUP can be a daunting task.

The Blue Planet Surf team has put together a great playlist of videos to help those knowledge-hungry individuals make the right decision when choosing their first SUP. Please check out any of the following links to provide useful insight on taking that first step:

Application Tips for installing Rail Saver Pro Clear rail tape for SUP board rails

Our shop manager Kevin Fung demonstrates how to professionally apply Rail Saver Pro clear protective rail tape.  It's tricky to do this without trapping bubbles, we recommend watching this video before attempting your first installation:

Follow this link to find Railsaver Pro on our website:

Kevin shows how to find the widest point of the rail.  Center the rail tape on the widest point, this is where it is the most likely to get damaged.

Strapping and locking SUP boards to your car using Kanu Locking straps

We recently made two videos that show our preferred methods for securing Stand Up Paddle boards or surfboards to your car easily using locking straps, the first one using two locking Kanu Lock locking straps with steel cables:

This second video shows how to strap and secure a single board to your car with a single 18' long Kanu Lock strap.  This method will work for Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP's), surfboards, Kayaks and the like:

Click this link to see the Kanu Lock straps we offer at Blue Planet Surf:

At our shop we also sell the Dockslocks locking system which locks a Stand Up Paddleboard or surfboard through the leash plug on the board.

The SUPGrip handle on our Blue Planet SUP's can also be used to run a cable lock directly through the handle as shown in this photo and video:

Watch this playlist for more helpful videos on how to strap and secure your Stand Up Paddleboard or Surf board quickly and safely to your car.  Please note: Use the 30 second single strap method only if your roof racks are very secure on your vehicle.  If in doubt or if you are traveling at high speeds or longer distances, always use two straps, one in the front and one in the back to secure your board.  Safety first, always check your straps and buckles for damage.

Costa Rica SUP trip

We took a family trip to Costa Rica in July 2015 and scored some amazing uncrowded waves on our SUP's.

Pura Vista Hills:

My good friend and Blue Planet team rider, Fabrice Beaux, formerly a professional windsurfer moved to Costa Rica a few years ago and now operates two vacation rental villas in a beautiful remote location overlooking the jungle and ocean, surrounded by wildlife.  He showed us some amazing, uncrowded surf breaks that were perfect for stand up paddling.   Check out the video for some video footage of SUP surfing in the area and what Fabrice Beaux is up to these days.

For more information on Fabrice's vacation rental villas, please visit:

We stayed at the larger Hacienda Isabella, which sleeps up to 10:

Fabrice also rents Hacienda De Shira, which sleeps up to 4:

Nosara Pura Vida:

We also went to Nosara where Oscar Diaz, a Nosara local and owner of Nosara Pura Vida showed us some of his favorite Stand Up Paddle surfing spots, including an incredible right hand reef break and Playa Guiones, a beautiful beach break in walking distance from his new shop.  We are currently working on a distribution deal to bring Blue Planet boards to Costa Rica and Nosara Pura Vida will be the first dealer to have our boards in stock, check back for more details coming soon:

Molokai to Oahu race 2015- Interview with Travis Grant and Blue Planet race team photos

This year's M2O race was the most challenging and grueling in recent memory.

The Blue Planet 14' x 28" Bump Rider model was well represented and the results show that this board works great in all conditions.  It excels in good downwind conditions but also glides well in light winds.

The Blue Planet race team on the beach in Molokai the day before the race.

Check out this video interview with the race winner Travis Grant on the day before the race with photos and video from race day and some great insights from the two times M2O champion:

Ready to go!

Starting off in decent conditions

The going gets tougher as we approach Oahu.

Finally approaching Portlock Point with a big south swell

Jeff Chang catches a nice wave at China Walls and finishes second in his age group, well done!

Robert Stehlik wins his age group division.

A great day for the Blue Planet race team, see you next year!
