Foil repair pen is a quick and easy way to repair small scratches on foils. It is a crayon like adhesive pen that dries black with a quick drying, durable bond. The pen is easy to use, simply apply it to the damaged area, let it dry, then wet sand it. Read more..

The proper way to repair deep scratches or gouges on a foil is to use two part epoxy filler.

For smaller scratches, using this pen is a much easier and faster way to repair your foil:

Aloha friends it's Robert Stehlik. Today’s blog is about repairing little scratches on your foil using this little halogen marker pen. A guy named Reuben on our wing foil group here on Oahu posted this on WhatsApp and we all ordered it so they got so many orders that they thought it was a scam. Today I'm actually trying this for the first time to repair some of these scratches on my foil, the front wing and the tail wing. Basically if you're foiling here in Hawaii in the waves you're going to scratch your foil at some point. It's really hard to avoid scratching your foil unless you stay in the deep water all the time and never catch any waves. It's very subtle so I don't think it has a big effect on how well the foil performs if there's a few scratches on it, but of course for performance. It's like a thick crayon type of pen. I'm just going to apply some to all the spots that are kind of white and scratched up looking . After it dried I'm gonna go over it with some fine 1500 or 2000 grit wet sandpaper.

The effects of small scratches on performance are very subtle, for most users I don't think it has a big effect on how well the foil performs, but of course for high speed performance, a smooth foil is better than a scratched up surface.

The pen is like a thick crayon that fills the cracks. You can apply it over all low spots that are kind of white and scratched up looking. After it dries, you can apply a second (or more) layers to make sure all the low spots are completely filled in.  Once the scratches are completely filled and the paint is fully dried, you go over it with some fine grit wet sandpaper.

I did apply a little bit on the other side first and then I did all the scratches on the bottom which was most of the scratches. Now I'm going to let it dry and then sand it with some wet sandpaper. This stuff dries pretty quickly, it's already kind of dry to the touch. I still want to fill it in a little bit more in some of these deeper gouges so I'm gonna add a little bit more to these. So far I can say it goes on really easily. It's also nice that it's black because that of course matches the black carbon of my Axis foil here.

My foil before scratch repair

Reuben recommended using 1500 or 2000 grit . It's much finer grit than this one but I'm gonna try it with 400. It's going to be smoother than it was before regardless of the Finish. It'll probably be like a little bit of a center finish but that's okay for me. I'm going to apply a little bit of water to the Sandpaper and to the foil and then just buff and smooth it out a little bit. It actually stayed in the cracks where it was supposed to fill so I'm pleasantly surprised how well this worked. It seems to be a pretty good repair. With the 600 grit it does have a little bit of a sanded finish but it's way better than it was before so I think it's going to work pretty well. I'm going to give it a go and see if it makes a difference performance wise. I’m pretty happy with this pen so I definitely can recommend it. Aloha see you on the water.

Foil after scratch repair, the paint is wet sanded off the surface so only the paint filling the scratches remains.

I’m happy to report that repairing scratches on your foil makes a noticeable difference in how smooth the foil performs, especially at high speeds, I definitely recommend giving it a try.

Aloha and see you on the water,

Robert Stehlik
